I started playing bass guitar in 1982. With my first band, I would happily spend entire Saturdays playing. Initially, I was going to sing, but that was no longer an option because I developed vocal cord polyps twice due to improper voice usage. No one else was playing bass guitar at the time, so it seemed like a logical choice. While practicing for my first performance, I decided that playing bass guitar is the most fun thing in the world, and that is why I chose to continue with it.
After graduating, I also started teaching.
Bass guitars, and especially bass ukuleles, need a bit of amplification to be clearly heard in a group.
But before electricity was invented, there was already bass. The double bass is the only acoustic bass with strings that is large enough to be seriously heard acoustically.
Most bass guitars are electric. That is convenient because it allows the bassist to control how loud they play.

Iris is a skilled bassist and a very pleasant teacher. She guided me from Seven Nation Army and Arctic Monkeys to the Rock Academy in Tilburg. Iris has both a broad and deep knowledge of bass playing specifically, and music in general. Additionally, she also has a lot of life experience and knowledge, and I have learned so much from her.
The bass guitar lessons with Iris are so much fun. For example, during a group lesson, we played "Blue Monk" to better understand chord progressions. Iris has a great ear and can sense exactly when the group wants to repeat something or who wants a bit more challenge and can practice a solo. Her lessons make you want to learn more about the bass quickly. Highly recommended!
With Iris, you get a complete package. She is exceptionally good at teaching, an interesting and active musician herself, and has fantastic people skills! Because of this, I learn something new every week in a relaxed atmosphere, and in just six months of bass and band lessons, I’ve achieved more than I expected.
Enthusiastic, motivating, patient, and fun is our band coach Iris. Iris teaches us how to play together as a band in an educational way. She introduces us to different music styles and gives us the freedom to choose which music we want to play. I find the weekly band lessons to be both educational and a fun, relaxing evening.
With my bass on my shoulder, I ended up not only in various European countries but also in Japan, Kenya, the United States, and Nigeria, among others.
